Tuesday R & R ride:

Some riders may have noticed that the Tuesday route is marked/painted on the pavement with a recognizable pink arrow that looks like the Capitol letter A You can follow this and it will point you through the whole 51 km route!! an alternative shorter route of 37km can be easily be rode by following the pink A to the corner of Bethesda Rd and the 6th concession then switch and follow the green A, however this route has not been finished off yet just make your way through Hampton and south on Green Rd back to home,  hopes are that the pavement fairies will finish it off.

Looking forward to the coming year

Hi OCC Members;

We are now well into the new Year of 2011 and we have some great cycling plans and club activities being planned for you. The execuctive team has been meeting and discussing the details and I might add that we have a fine blend of talents and strengths represented in our OCC executive team, so expect great things to happen this year!!

Both online and the printable OCC membership application form on this website are now current for 2011. Or you can wait until the Awards Banquet where there will be applications available, you can rejoin on the spot. I will keep all 2010 members on the email address lists until after the Awards banquet, if you will not be rejoining (I hope you will) please let me know I can take you off the email list. Remember to join early and save $5, membership price goes up after April 30th and you don't want to miss my informative emails!!! LOL

First things:(more details to follow)

Members will soon receive a club survey that we want everyone to complete,  by doing this you will be entered into a draw for a club jersey or 1 years free membership!

Saturday Feb 26 at 4pm mark on your calendars, the Awards Banquet and Potluck which will be held at Hope Fellowship church

Toronto Bike Show for those who attend, set for March 4, 5 and 6 I am not sure yet if we will have a booth for the Ride4UnitedWay yet?

Tuesday March 22, 7pm will be our Spring General Meeting at Donevan sports complex in the meeting room.

An email will soon come with club requests for Jerseys and shorts our VP. TJ. Adams will be handling this order

April 9th 10-1pm at Legends rec centre we will once again have the OCC open house

One of the things I love is planning/organizing trips and featured rides, I know this overwhelms many but I realize some need to know dates to book off time at work. This is what lies ahead, of course as these date approach more details will come by email, as well there will be many more rides added to this list that are not OCC regular scheduled rides

Tours and Featured Rides;

April 17-May 1- Ride the Natchez Trace Parkway http://www.nps.gov/natr/planyourvisit/bicyclinghome.htm from Nashville to Natchez Mississippi this tour will be self-supported meaning you need a bike to carry your gear and we will be camping. However if there is anyone who would be willing to drive a vehicle and carry bags I would like to talk to you. Also if you really wanted to do this trip hotels along the way could be booked. Contact Melissa if you are interested for details as emails concerning this trip will only go out to those who have requested it.

Lilac Ride: Wed May 25th, which takes place in Prince Edward County. We car pool together and begin our ride from Bloomfied at 10am, spend the day exploring the island at a moderate pace, with spectacular lake views all around us, including several stops at the cheese store, lake on the mountain and of course we stop to smell the lilacs, this ride is 100km but can be shortened to 50- 70km.

Ride to Trent University- (needs to be properly named)June 4th-5 80km ride to Peterborough and staying over at Trent University, riding home the next day via an alternate route, at your own speed, rest stops and places of interest will be enjoyed, fully supported, details to come. Need volunteers to form a committee I have 3 so far please contact me.

GOBA (Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure) www.Goba.comJune 18-25th- this is a fully supported tour that 6-10 OCC members have been attending each year, it is quite an experience and is family friendly. Cost is reasonable at about $200 per person for the week, mostly camping but motels and college dorms can also be arranged for accomodation, food extra.

Canada Day ride and barbecue- July 1st, this ride is the distance of Canada's birthday!! for those who like long distances. Shorter routes are also planned (80km & 40km). We will do this ride with other local bike clubs and have a barbecue and social time after the ride.

Ride to Montreal along the Waterfront trail- July 8th-12th self supported, camping, But motels along the way could be easily arranged its a trip I've done, its awesome!!!

Le tour de Norfolk- July 16 & 17th. www.letourdenorfolk.com A group of OCC members did this ride for the first time last year and it was really enjoyed. It takes place south of Brantford and has great roads. distance options, but if you have a  goal to do your first century of 100 miles(160km) this is the place to do it, as the roads are fairly flat but the scenery is great as you are in alot of farmland with crops of tabacco, ginseng, canteloupes Etc. I would love to bring a big group of riders to this ride this year.

Joy and Grahams ride- July 30, 31 and Aug 1 (civic holiday) well this is the name I came up with anyway LOL!! this is from a cycling friends house (her brother is Graham Rutherford who is an OCC member) near London she has offered to host rides and we can camp in her back yard details will still be worked out.

Great Hudson Valley Pedal August 16-21 http://www.ptny.org/hudsontour/index.shtml  this is a fully supported 6 day trip, it is camping.( I do believe hotels can be arranged?) It starts in Albany, New York and rides right into New York City where you can either stay and explore or get on a bus provided back to the start. For those who are intimidated by the bigger mileage this is the bike ride for you, as the distances are less then most bike trips at about 35-45 miles (55-70km) per day, so lots of time for sight seeing and socializing.

Ride4UnitedWay (website link on the OCC's website) on August 28th, with distances of 50, 100 and 160 km routes, also just added will be a 20km "community ride" for families and recreational riders, this ride was known as the OCC's Scugog Circle Century for 25 years until 2009 when we teamed up with United Way

Ok that lots of info for you to all absorb, I think you will agree it will be a awesome cycling year
If anyone wants me to send info on any other trips planned,  let me know

The Final Ride Of 2010

2010 FinalRide

This past Saturday, October 23rd, about 40 members set out for the "Finale ride". We started from Hope Fellowship Church with a wind from the east and rode toward Bowmanville. The sun was shining which made the ride all that more enjoyable. We rode through Orono, over Hwy 115 and south on Lawrence and back on the 4th Concession enjoying a tail wind as we rode back. We were all set up for our potluck dinner and enjoyed coffee and tea on our arrival back to the church. The dinner was outstanding as there were so many varieties of main courses, appetizers, salads, and desserts. Well done members for a most awesome meal!!!! Social time was enjoyed during and after the meal.
After dinner, Doug Barlow did a tire/tube change demonstration which attracted a crowd of 15 members or so who wanted to learn how its done. Many tips and tricks of tire changing, names of bike parts and tools were taught.
This was the first time we have had a potluck from Hope Fellowship Church and many commented on how great a place it was. We would like to use the church again for future events as it is in a great location (especially for a ride), has great washrooms, nice kitchen and is very comfortable. Everything included for a very affordable price. The Enfield church is closing, so most likely we will not hold our Banquet and Awards Potluck in February or early March from this location again.
I want to say how impressed I was with the amount of volunteers he had to help set up and who stayed after and helped clean up. "Many hands makes work light" Much thanks to you all!!!!

Rookie Rides

The Oshawa Cycling Club 2010 Rookie Rides have surpassed all expectations this year with attendance reaching up to 50 cyclists on some evenings. The following letter was received from one of our new members.

Hi Melissa,

Just wanted to say the Rookie and Recreation ride (my first ever) was absolutely awesome - awesome - AWESOME tonight. You and Jennifer (I think that's her name) and Al and everyone who contributed to training and guiding us on our route were simply wonderful. I think you're great and I am very delighted in my decision to join the OCC.

I look forward to another 'riding adventure' very soon. My schedule is such that, unfortunately, I can only make it to a Tuesday R & R ride every second Tuesday... however, I am looking at perhaps making the Thursday ride (that is of course if it's not a fast pace ride) ... will have to depend on you to keep me informed as I'm confident you will. :-)

Thanks sooo much for a wonderful evening of riding - have a fantastic week...

OCC Banquet

Oshawa Cycling Club members gathered together on Sunday March 7th for the annual awards banquet. We enjoyed a meal together and had some social time getting reacquainted with some of our riding friends who we haven't seen all winter.

There was talk of the many successes of the 2009 riding year including the "rookie ride", that was well attended and the "lilac ride" which also was a hit. Both rides will be continued in 2010. We remembered the Canada Day ride hosted by Mike and Carmen which had a great attendance with many of the new "rookie riders" hitting milestone distances of 80-100km and for those who wanted longer distances, we rode the distance of Canada's birthday!! The Ride4UnitedWay ride in August had its successes and some things that need to be improved. Some of us completed out of Country/province riding in Ohio, Michigan and Quebec (Petite Train Du Nord). For some in this group, this was their first experience at long distance multi-day riding and they felt great accomplishment in completing these rides.
It was a great year for the OCC, now 30 years old!!!

Gifts of appreciation were handed out to Jeanette Piercy who ran as club President for many years and Joanne Barlow who as been our club treasurer for a number of years.

Prizes were won including jerseys, gift certificates, bike tune ups, helmets etc. A BIG THANK-YOU TO OUR LOCAL BIKE SHOPS, BICYCLES PLUS AND IMPALA BIKE SHOP FOR DONATING MOST OF THE PRIZES!!
